Genius Hour Project

What is genius hour you may ask? Watch the video I created below to find out!



Now what exactly am I thinking for my genius hour? My genius hour project proposal is to create a resource which helps people travel South America on a budget. Below, is the slideshow which outlines what I hope to do and why.

I hope my trailer got you excited! I am now coming to the end of my time for my genius hour project. Below is a TedTalk I did to sum up part of my project, and supplement all the information I have shared on my blog. I hope you like it and even learn a little something.

    I just watched your trailer. Seems like an awesome idea for a genius hour. I do like to travel on a budget myself and I've never been to South America before.

    I enjoyed your trailer, it was fun and clearly showed what your genius hour is about.One thing that maybe could have been added is some narration, but everything else was there element wise. Also I saw some of the pictures were cited, but then others weren't. Where did the other pictures come from?

    Hi Becky! I enjoyed watching your powtoon trailer, I agree with Jonathon that if anything you could have added some narration! Your trailer was clear and concise which make it easy to outline what you will be researching! Well done!

    Hi Becky, just watched your TED talk! I won't be commenting on the content, for obvious reasons...
    The video seems clear and stable, do you mind me asking what you used? I used my phone and the quality wasn't all that great.
    Your TED talk is well within the time limit!
    Your head is nice and centered in the video, but the video doesn't show your hands. Since one of the keys to a successful TED talk involves hand gestures, it might be better to show at least the top half of your torso? Just something to think about for the next time you give a TED talk...:P
    Another thing - I understand that adding captions is a lot of work. If you had a transcript of your video, you could add it? It would make your video way more accessible.

      So I turned on the automatic captions for your video and they're not that bad, FYI! I tried the automatic captions for my video and they were terrible. It depends on voice volume and clarity, etc etc. A transcript would still be nice, though :)

      Thank you for your feedback! Next time I will definitely keep that in mind. I should have added captions to make it more accessible for everyone. I'm glad the automatic captions weren't too awful.

    I went and watched your Ted Talk and enjoyed it as it was a useful and informative talk. I enjoy travelling and south america is definitely of interest so knowing it's safe and can be done on a budget is great to know.

    Hey Becky, I really enjoyed your Ted Talk and Genius Hour Portfolio as a whole. I have always been interested in traveling to South America so it is awesome that you have created a resource to demonstrate how affordable it really is! If I have to critique your ted talk the only thing I would say is that the sound was a little unclear but, it honestly didn't take away from the ted talk at all.

Peru

Traveling Peru on a Budget: So unlike Colombia, which I talked about in my last post, Peru has a very distinct Tourist Trail. It is much harder to go off the beaten track and you will likely be surrounded by other tourists at most points of your trip. BUT it is an extremely beautiful, cheap and easy to travel country, especially for first time travelers. A typical budget here is only around $30-$40/day, and includes all your excursions, food, transportation, and of course beer.  A typical Itinerary would be similar to the one seen below. Exploring Learning Objects

Today we looked at various online tools to create different learning objects for our classes. Below, is my exploration of "emaze," where I attempted to create a presentation for my genius hour project. I enjoyed this tool, as it allows you to make creative videos or presentations using pre-set pages. I am not good at the little details when using online technology, and this takes the pressure off. I could see myself using this tool to create online power-point's for my students to follow along with if they are having trouble on certain concepts in class. It allows them to easily go back and forth between pages, and the app allows you to insert videos and pictures which is very useful in chemistry classes.
